UNDERSTANDING USERS' NEEDS

The process typically starts with running a workshop to discover new opportunities in creating or improving a service delivery – Design Thinking is the format of choice here.

For existing services, it is crucial to analyze actual usage using one of many available methods known from user research in order to get an understanding of how real users interact with an offer.
Gathered data will allow to derive and prioritize the aspects that need improvement.

In the case of large websites or complex tools, it is advised to begin by focusing on the Top Tasks as advocated by Gerry McGovern.

MAPPING THE CUSTOMER JOURNEY

Once the project scope is defined, we move on to shaping the entire interaction process from a user’s perspective – this is best known as user or customer journey mapping.

The journey map identifies the touchpoints between user and organization – and thus helps

  • to define the context and expectations in the case of new touchpoints  and
  • to identify strengths and weaknesses of existing touchpoints, allowing their improvement.

The closer each specific touchpoint can be matched to actual user needs, the more natural the interaction will feel. DE3P’s 77 Human Needs System provides an excellent and detailed method at this stage.

03.

PROTOTYPING

Prototyping is made with tools that allow a quick discovery of potential solutions for the defined use cases.

Wireframes and decision paths are created before coding the front-end; while required backend modules or data connectors can be ordered at this stage so as to be ready when needed.
